WHERE NATURE MEETS THE CANVAS

Every brushstroke is inspired by the untamed beauty of Canada’s landscapes and wildlife. As a self-taught artist, Leslie Cartwright transforms real moments in nature into timeless works of art,  capturing not just what we see, but what we feel.

ABOUT ME

Discover & Experience the World of Leslie Cartwright Art

"Happy little trees," and flowers were the subject of my first oil painting, completed in the living room of a family friend while we watched a Bob Ross video together. I fondly remember that first exposure to the creamy smoothness of oil paints on canvas, the immense joy I found in blending the vibrant colours. Soon, I would be participating in paint classes alongside adults in my community though I was barely a teenager.

Instilled with a love of nature and wildlife by my parents, I always knew that I would be a lifelong creator of art in many forms. The deepest and most resounding inspiration sprung forward the first time I discovered a book of Robert Bateman's artworks. Mesmerized, I slowly turned the pages of the hardcover book, enthralled by the beauty and grandeur of the landscapes and animals he captured in his compositions.

"This is what I want to do one day," I told my parents.

The autumn of 2011 is when I first met Terry Isaac during a week-long painting workshop he instructed in Cranbrook, B.C. He would quickly become my mentor and friend. Terry's work had been endorsed by Bateman years before and I was profoundly impacted by Terry's methods and techniques. "He totally changed the way I paint," is what I have most often said of Terry since then. I was fortunate to have guidance and instruction from Terry again for another week in September of 2012, where I spent several days at his studio on the beautiful Naramata Benches just outside of Penticton, B.C.

In October of 2014, I was one of a handful of lucky students at Hollyhock, on Cortes Island, who would participate in slideshows, lessons, and thought provoking discussions with none other than Robert Bateman himself. It was tremendously rewarding and also more than a little unnerving to have a piece of my art critiqued by such a legend. It has been, and will always remain, one of the highlights of my career as an artist.

April of 2018 would be my chance to host my friend Terry Isaac in my little hometown of Canal Flats, B.C. Terry's patience and gentle way of advising an artist on their work were what made him so highly sought after as an instructor. "Thank you for everything you shared with me Terry. You are remembered often and fondly."

At present, I dabble in a few art forms but stick mostly to painting in acrylics. Their fast drying time is easier on my patience and the fact that they don't require paint thinner is kinder to my brushes and my head which has become more sensitive to the smell of oils over the years. I am an avid hiker, exploring the Purcell and Rocky Mountain ranges in the East Kootenays of B.C. Though I work mostly from my own photos as reference, I will, from time to time, create work from photographers who graciously supply artists like me with beautiful resources.

While I do take on a lot of commission work, I insist on being the creative foreman in these projects as it's hard for me to pour my creative heart and soul into something that doesn't move me.

My artworks can be found in person at The Village Social Cafe in Canal Flats, B.C, and in the artist catalogue in Cranbrook Photo, Cranbrook, B.C.

Hear It From My Clients

Leslie is an incredibly talented artist whose work is deeply rooted in realism. Each piece showcases her meticulous attention to detail, often blurring the line between painting and photography. Inspired by nature, landscapes, and animals, she has a remarkable ability to capture quiet beauty in the subtlest of moments, whether it's the fine texture of an animal’s fur or the intricate lines of a single leaf. While I haven’t (yet) had the opportunity to purchase one of her pieces, I truly hope to do so in the near future.
